Women in Kerkennah are formally organized in first official group

The Voices for Just Climate (VCA) network in Tunisia successfully established the first formal Fisherwomen and Agriculture Development Group in Kerkennah Island. About 50 women are now part of this formal group, that actively participates in decision-making processes, collectively addressing climate change concerns at the national level. Through their efforts, the group has secured funding for local nature-based solutions focused on preserving and restoring Kerkennah's endemic palm.

Situated in the Mediterranean, the Kerkennah Islands face significant climate vulnerability and economic marginalization. Women, in particular, bear the brunt of water scarcity and the threats to fishing and agriculture. As part of the VCA network, WWF-Tunisia is dedicated to preserving and restoring the traditional palm groves, which have proven effective in mitigating soil salinity and facilitating agriculture and traditional Charfia fishing. This support has the potential to benefit 15,500 individuals and safeguard an area of 5,000 hectares.
