Raising local voices to resist reduction Resex's territory

Organizations from the Voices for Just Climate Action network (VCA), particularly the 'Youth Communicative Network' supported by WWF, successfully mobilized civil society and politicians to resist and advocate against social and environmental setbacks, with a specific focus on defending the Extractive Reserve (Resex) Chico Mendes. Their efforts led to the blocking of Bill 6024/2019, which aimed to reduce the territory of the Resex.

The Resex Chico Mendes was created in 1990 and stands as an icon for solutions that maintain the forest while improving the livelihoods of the communities residing within it. The reserve operates on the principle of sustainable use, allowing traditional populations to engage in extractive activities such as Brazil nut and rubber harvesting. The conservation units such as the Resex Chico Mendes, are essential for preserving biodiversity, maintaining carbon stocks, and supporting the livelihoods of local communities.

Support from local CSO’s

The successful resistance against Bill 6024/2019 is a significant achievement for local voices and the conservation of the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve. By raising awareness, mobilizing civil society, and engaging with politicians, the local organizations effectively blocked the proposed reduction of the Resex's territory. The efforts to resist and advocate against setbacks and threats to these areas demonstrate the commitment to protecting nature and ensuring the well-being of both people and the environment.
